A Perfect Day

The last several days have been quite hot and humid for this time of year in the Chicago-land area.  In fact, the heat has been hotter than usual for the dead of summer.  This July and August we only had a handful of days requiring the air conditioning.

That changed with the turn of the calendar to September. Once Labor Day arrived the summer weather seemed to finally show up.  We’ve had several days of 90+ temperatures, in the last 10 days.  I really don’t do well with excessive heat, at least I don’t like to do well with it.

Last night a cold front passed through our area and today the winds are gusty and out of the north with wonderful refreshing coolness.  The doors are open and the windows are up.  I welcome the breeze to blow through our home and give extra energy to me in the process.

I know that many people enjoy the hot weather and to an extent, so do I.  Yet, in the middle of September, my desire for high temps has been satiated.  If it is 9 or 10 months before I see the next day in the 90’s that is perfectly fine on my part.

Today is a perfect day!  The sky is deep blue with puffy clouds.  The breeze is refreshing.  The air is clean and clear from allergens. This is my definition of a perfect day.  Tomorrow the temperature will drop more and be in the upper 60’s.  That might be a bit cool for some this time of the year.  For me, it’s still fine.

It’s very easy to write about such a day and find inspiration in it.  I am inspired to write and to work, to exercise and to get things done.  Still, just because it is easy to understand being inspired on such a day, that doesn’t mean that most people are inspired on such a day.  Many people are so preoccupied with one heavy burden or another that a perfect day is ignored or not seen at all.  For many, if such a day is noticed, it receives a “yeah, that’s nice” and then back to work or to some inner pain.

I look at every day, whether perfect or not, as a gift from God.  It is a 24 hour period unlike any other.  What I do, or think, or write today is unique.  A day exactly like this one has never existed before and will never exist again.  There is so much to experience.  So many people to meet.  So much to write and think and do.  What an incredible gift!

You know, this is a perfect day in that the temperature is what is most comfortable to me and easiest to breathe and inspiring to my senses.  However, on this perfect day I am reminded that every day is actually a perfect day as well.  Each day may not be as pleasant as today but then again may pleasant feelings are not always needed or helpful.

This blog was just to be about reflections on the beauty and wonder of this day and yet it went further.  This day became a prototype to me of everyday. The reflection on this perfect day led me to think on the uniqueness and importance of every day.

Sometimes I surprise and inspire myself.  I now see that each day I can bound out of bed ready for a new adventure even if it is not of my choosing or what I would define as pleasant or perfect, and that’s because every day really is a perfect day.
