Yesterday was the largest snow storm we had in 2 years. It must have been 8 inches of the shite stuff. For some saying an 8″ snowfall might bring yawns. Around our area it brings sore backs from the amount of shoveling. It was a great time to spend with my kids and others on our street. A few earned money by shoveling sidewalks and driveways. Others donned the snow gear and went to war with snow ball and igloo type fort. It was indeed a great day to spend with the kids and to expent lots of energy shoveling my own driveway and sidewalk. Not much got done, but it was worth the sacrifice of productivity.
Today I write! I’ve decided to visit the local public library. It is a top notch facility. Our city expanded the library more than doubling the square footage about 6 years ago. There are so many specialty areas now. I love to sit here and write. It is inspiring to look through the curved window in the front to see snow on evergreens and some local apartments.
I am at the library to make progress on my second book. I did some thought work and organization yesterday. Now is the time to move ahead. As I sat to write on the book I noticed the sense of inspiration in this library setting. So, before I do the book I wanted to blog post about my findings of the library itself.
Being in a good library is like attending a party of smart, engaging people. The difference is that I have complete control of the interaction. I can pick up one book or article and read the entirty or just browse a bit without an insult. Books therefore are all about me and what I draw from them. Of course they are also about you and what you draw from them.
Something I really appreciate about the library is that it is not my hove. There is always another job to do or errand to run. I can write at home but I like the change of pace. I like getting up and browsing the book titles and picking up one or two. The texture of a book in my hands is more inspiring to me than just holding an e-reader. I am not criticizing e-books and the new communication of the written word. I am only saying that a book is more than the words inside the cover. A book is an experience. A book is a new friend to be made. It encompasses all the senses, even taste. It is not that you physically lick the book but through the other senses you do get a ‘taste’ for the book and the writing. The same is true for the library itself.
There is so much to encounter at the library. There is so much to be inspired by at the library. There is so much to write and read at the library. This blog is about finding inspiration where you least expect it. The library for many is such a place. It is time to find real inspiration among the stacks, while sitting or walking in your local library. Read something that someone else was inspired to write.
Be inspired!
